On October 1, the Asian Social Institute (ASI) is celebrating its 54th Foundation Anniversary, with the theme close to its vision and mission, “Pakiisang Loob sa Larangan ng Lupa, Tirahan at Trabaho” or “Solidarity and Compassionate Action in the Areas of Land, Shelter and Work”. For the event, which will feature Philippine Vice- President Leni Robredo as Francis Senden Memorial Lecture (FSML) resource speaker, there will be a chance to hear from the grassroots leaders representing farmers, fisherfolks, indigineous groups, informal urban dwellers, and women, school, church, labor, policy advocate groups, and local government units.
The theme for this year’s FSML program was inspired from the 2014 World Meeting of Popular and Grassroots Leaders called by Pope Francis sponsored by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace led by Cardinal P. K. Turkson (the ASI 2012 FSML resources speaker) held at the Vatican. Three Filipino participants from ASI attended the 2014 World Meeting of Popular Leaders in Rome: Rafael Olivera, Joemedes Arrienda, and Christopher Funes, from the Social Development department and Co-Creating Sustainable Bio-Regional Communities or CSBCom.
In Dr. Mina Ramirez’s letter to Brgy. 675 Chairman Lazaro asking him to coordinate with the preparation of the said event, and to be one of the participants in this Saturday’s event, “maraming salamat po sa palagian ninyong pakikiisa sa aming gawain na inaalay namin sa kapakanan namin sa kapakanan ng lahat, lalong-lalo na ang nasa laylayan ng lipunan”, or “Thank you for always being one with us in our mission for the common good of all, especially those in the periphery”.
This is the second time that VP Leni Robredo is coming to ASI as resource speaker. In November 21, 2013, she was invited to talk to about her advocacy, on the Anti-Corruption Measures, as the Representative of the 3rd Distict of Camarines Sur.
A mini trade fair featuring the products of ASI community partners such as farm produce, handicraft, gift items, and various organic food items shall be held in the morning.
