After the momentous and successful Golden (50th) Jubilee on October 4-6, 2012, it once again had another milestone on October 20, 2012 when it had its PEACE POLE planting ceremony and Peace Marker unveiling.

Organized by Ms. Genevieve Kupang, a candidate for the PhD in Applied Cosmic Anthropology, member of the Mandala Peace Arts Initiative, Inc., and a peace advocate who actively promotes peace projects and awareness among the students of St. Paul College Pasig where she is a teacher and who promotes mandala-making for peace.

Ms. Genevieve Kupang was central to organizing the “Million Human Signs for Peace” campaign which started on the International Day of Peace, 2009, a highlight of the World March as it passed through the Philippines. For the Peace Pole Planting in ASI, Ms. Kupang invited the ASI foreign students of various nationalities, Prof. Remy Nalundasan-Abijan, Board Member of WCCI and Mr. Osberto “Osbi” Santillan, President of World without Wars – Philippines, to read the peace prayer for the different countries of the world. Ms. Kupang delivered the meaningful opening remarks while Mr. Mario “Toots” Fungo, WPPS Representative from the Philippines, delivered the emotional peace message.

The unveiling of the Peace Marker marked the highlight of the event. The text inscribed in the peace marker was composed by Dr. Mina Ramirez, President of the Asian Social Institute. She also delivered the touching closing remarks.

The idea of the Peace Pole is said to have been first thought by Masahisa Goi in 1955 in Japan. Since then, it is estimated that there are more than 200,000 Peace Poles that have been dedicated in nearly every country on Earth. Peace Poles usually displays the message, "May Peace Prevail on Earth” in the language of the country where it is planted. The message is referred to as a peace prayer.

The message of the marker for ASI which was composed by the ASI President, Dr. Mina Ramirez, is read as: GOD IS LOVE; ALL CREATION BEARS THE IMPRINT OF GOD'S LOVE; LOVE COMPELS US TO BE JUST; WITHOUT JUSTICE, WITHOUT LOVE, THERE IS NO PEACE.

Ms. Kupang mentioned that “the peace pole planting symbolizes the oneness of humanity and common wish for a world at peace; it reminds us to think, speak and act in the spirit of peace and harmony and stand us a silent visual for peace to prevail on earth.” She further reiterated that, “planting a Peace Pole is a way of bringing people together to inspire, awaken and uplift the human consciousness the world over. It is a wonderful project for any community group, from children to senior citizens.” Indeed, this is true as the ceremony was truly moving and I’m sure it is a mutual feeling for the entire ASI community on October 20, 2012. May Peace Prevail on Earth, especially in ASI!!!
